LOVE, FAITH AND SALVATION

TEXT: LUKE 7: 37 – 50

INTRODUCTION

Though not certain, it is possible that Simon the Pharisee was the leper that was healed by Jesus, (Matt. 8:2- 4; 26:6-7, Mark 1:40-45; 14:3) and that the “sinful woman” was Mary of Bethany, the sister of Lazarus. (John 11:2,; 12:1-8). This instance may not be the only time Jesus was anointed, the instances recorded by

Matthew, Mark, and John may be other ones. However, it was only Luke that recorded this incidence this way.

These concepts of love, faith and salvation were brought to the fore in Verse 40-43. If we consider Simon as the leper that was healed, and this woman as the one caught in adultery (John 8:3-11). Simon as a Pharisee knew and kept the law, (Matt. 8:4) but leprosy, in their own context, signifies a curse from God. Being healed by Jesus means that he obtained forgiveness. This woman on the other hand was publicly condemned to death but was explicitly discharged and acquitted by Jesus. Both of them demonstrated love and faith and they received salvation through Christ.

2. Discuss the process a sinner can undertake to enjoy the depths of God’s love through Christ? Acts 2: 37-38, Rom. 10:8-11.
3. What are the things that can hinder someone’s salvation? Heb. 3:8-12, James 4:4-6.
4. Discuss God’s intention for all men today. 1Timothy 2:1-4, 2Peter 3:9.
